We are excited about this year’s LTC Camp. Every year the ALERT Cadet staff looks forward to putting this camp together to serve 13 to 17-year-old ALERT Cadet men and their fathers. We are excited about this opportunity to teach leadership and character in a week-long learning laboratory to eager students. Our goal with each camp is to give the participants skills they can take back to, and implement in, their ALERT Cadet units. We also have a bit of fun along the way!
The theme for this year’s camp is I Cor. 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. This will be our spring board for our daily events beginning with our morning Wisdom Searches. Let me tell you about this year’s camp in hopes that you will be able to join us. I’ll use the name of the camp “Leadership Training Corps Camp” to lay out what we plan to do.
First, we discuss and teach leadership. This year we will be discussing what it means to become a “great Christian” using Chip Ingram’s book “Good To Great in God’s Eyes, Ten Practices Great Christians Have in Common”. Roger Farr will be returning to LTC camp for several evenings to lead us in this potentially life changing book. We would strongly encourage each of you to obtain a copy of this book prior to camp and begin reading it early. This book is longer than we have used in previous years and may be a challenge to meet the rigorous reading schedule necessary. Your parents may also find this to be a book they would like to read and implement into their lives.
Next, we will do training. This year we will focus on several skills including: canoeing, search & rescue techniques (SAR), rappelling, obstacle course, river crossing and maps compass and GPS. We will be joined by several young men from the ESO and Aquatics Departments, and Col Tanner from the International ALERT Academy (IAA) who will teach and assist us in this portion of our training. Our purpose in learning these basic skills is to be ready to serve others when circumstances necessitate and to be able to go back to your squads & units and to teach these skills to them.
Third, we will learn esprit de corps. Learning to live, work, and thrive in a group environment is sometimes a challenge for young men. PT and daily uniform, room, and gear inspections will keep all of us fit and on our toes. Squad competitions will encourage young men and fathers to work together to overcome the weaknesses and utilize the strengths of their members.
Lastly, we will camp. One of the highlights on every evaluation from past camps is our two-day hike where we carry everything on our back necessary for an overnight camp. Yes, this is a stretch for young men, and for older men, like me. We will also utilize this time to teach and practice additional skills such as river crossing, maps, compass, and GPS skills.
If you are a 13-17 year old ALERT Cadet member or a father of one, I hope you will be able to join us at IAA in Big Sandy this year for the camp. The dates are April 18-25 (Monday to Monday) in Big Sandy, Texas. We will start registration at 1pm on the 18th, and end at noon the following Monday. Cost is $299 per person. The gear list and tentative schedule are posted above. Registration and payment are again on-line this year. You can register by clicking the link above. If you need us to pick you up at a nearby airport, train or bus station, there is an extra cost for this service, so please note that on the registration form.
Of course, if you have questions please call us at 903-636-9228, and we will be happy to get you answers. Likewise, if you rather register by phone, then call us.
We look forward to seeing you in Big Sandy in April!
FAQ
Do I need Cadet green PT gear?
A dark color is acceptable for PT uniforms and many of the guys will opt to wear a dark color rather than cadet green. Modesty in length is the key.
How far are the morning runs going to be?
There are only two “runs” are currently scheduled; one from the dorms to the track one morning, and a second being the PT test.
How far is the overnight hike?
The overnight hike will only be 16-20 miles over the course of 2 days. If someone has to pull out for health reasons we will have transportation available.
I have a health condition, can I still participate?
We will accommodate medical issues to the best of our ability; fathers and sons participate to the best of their God given ability.
I have my own carabiner, but it is not D-shaped, is that okay?
Another type carabiner is acceptable, as long as it is a climbing rated, locking carabiner.
I am coming with my friend/brother. Can we share a tent?
Yes, you can definitely share the tent, though it should be large enough for both of you to sleep and to keep your stuff dry if it is raining.
Can I bring pogie (personal food)?
Yes, you may.
