Below is a camp description sent out by Lt. Col. Farr.
Gentlemen,
Every year I look forward to putting this camp together to serve 13 to 17-year-old ALERT Cadet men and their fathers. This is one of the highlights of my year as we have an opportunity to teach leadership and character in a week-long learning laboratory to eager students. Our goal with each camp is to give the participants skills they can take back to, and implement in, their ALERT Cadet units. We also have a bit of fun along the way!
Let me tell you about this year’s camp in hopes that you will be able to join us. I’ll use the name of the camp “Leadership Training Corps Camp” to lay out what we do,
First, we discuss and teach leadership. This year we will be discussing the attitude of a leader using John Maxwell’s book, “The Difference Maker.” We’ll discuss our attitude toward authority, our responsibilities, and our God-given influence on what we do and say. The men will also have opportunities to lead their squads through practical exercises designed to bring out the best in their attitudes!
Next, we will do training. This year we will focus on ropes and their use. The high angle rescue trainers from the International ALERT Academy (IAA) will teach us specific rappelling, pick-off, and climbing skills. We’ll also learn how to utilize rope and leverage in amazing ways to move people and objects. Of course where there is rope, there, of necessity, must be knots. We will learn many practical knots which will certainly come in handy during our practical exercises with the young men and fathers.
Third, we will learn esprit de corps. Learning to live, work, and thrive in a group environment is sometimes a challenge for young men. Daily uniform, room, and gear inspections will keep all of us on our toes. Squad competitions will encourage young men and fathers to work together to overcome the weaknesses and utilize the strengths of their members.
Lastly, we will camp. One of the highlights on every evaluation from past camps is our 25 mile, two-day hike where we carry everything on our back necessary for an overnight camp. Yes, this is a stretch for young men, and for older men, like me. And, yes, I have made the hike with them, every step of the way!
If you are a 13-17 year old ALERT Cadet member or a father of one, I hope you will be able to join us at IAA in Big Sandy this year for the camp. The dates are April 19-26 (Monday to Monday) in Big Sandy, Texas. We will start at noon and end at noon. Cost is $295 per person. The gear list and tentative schedule are posted at http://www.alertcadet.org/news/2009/12/10/national-ltc-camp-big-sandy-tx/. Registration and payment are on-line this year. You can register on the same page or at this link, https://iaa.ccbchurch.com/app/w_form_response.php?form_id=13. If you need us to pick you up at a nearby airport, train or bus station, please note that on the registration form.
Of course, if you have questions please call us at 903-636-9228, and we will be happy to get you answers. Likewise, if you rather register by phone, then call us.
I look forward to seeing you in Big Sandy next month!
